The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami devastated the city of Banda Aceh, but the recovery process was both aided by the tourism industry and led to significant expansion of the Banda Aceh tourism ‘product’. Tsunami tourism is now an important component of Banda Aceh’s economy and image.

Doberstein, B. (2018). The intersection of tourism and disaster: Post-2004 tsunami recovery in Banda Aceh, Indonesia. Presented at The American Association of Geographers (AAG) annual meeting, April 10-14, 2018. New Orleans, USA.

Recovery programs after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami highlight the complexity of implementing risk reduction measures. From rebuilding destroyed infrastructure, using structural vs non-structural mitigation, rebuilding on site vs relocation, the recovery efforts offer many opportunities for lessons learned.

The 2010 eruption of Mt. Merapi, Indonesia was the largest since the 1870s, resulting in 353 deaths, 400,000 people displaced, and the loss of 2,200 homes. Post-disaster risk reduction efforts focused on relocation, improving monitoring, education, and evacuation, but are complicated by strong cultural beliefs in the region.

Project co-investigator Dr. Erin O’Connell provides a short lecture on relocation communities established after the 2013 Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) disaster in the Philippines. In this lecture, she explores the question of whether to rebuild or relocate from high-risk coastal areas after disaster, and some of the advantages and disadvantages of each approach. Some of the concerns of residents of relocation communities are highlighted using specific examples from case study sites on Bantayan Island, Cebu province.
