Jacqueline defends Master’s thesis!
On January 17th, 2024, Jacqueline Harper successfully defended her master’s thesis examining the nexus between cultural capital, tourism, and disaster recovery in the Kathmandu Valley, Nepal after the 2015 Gorkha Earthquake.
She had three objectives for the research:
1️⃣ Engage tourism professionals and other key stakeholders to identify and evaluate strategies that were implemented to understand how tourism contributes to or hinders disaster recovery.
2️⃣ Identify how cultural capital was used within the tourism industry after the Gorkha Earthquake.
3️⃣ Provide policymakers and tourism practitioners with evidence-based recommendations on how to strengthen social networks within the community to reduce impacts for future disasters.

Jacqueline was also a finalist for the in the University of Waterloo GRADflix showcase. GRADflix is a research communication event where graduate students create and submit a one-minute video highlighting the significance of their research. This year’s competition featured 162 submissions, of which Jacqueline was one of 15 finalists!
